Southampton, England
Lying near the head of Southampton Water, a peninsula between the estuaries of the Rivers Test and Itchen, Southampton is Britain’s largest cruise port. It has been one of England’s major ports since the Middle Ages, when it exported wool and hides from the hinterland and imported wine from Bordeaux. The city suffered heavy damage during World War Two and as a result the centre has been extensively rebuilt, but there are still some interesting medieval buildings including the Bargate, one of the finest city gatehouses in England.
Seville (Cádiz), Spain
Believed to be the oldest town on the Iberian Peninsula, the Andalusian port of Cádiz enjoys a stunning location at the edge of a six-mile promontory. The town itself, with 3,000 years of history, is characterised by pretty white houses with balconies often adorned with colourful flowers. As you wander around, be sure to take a stroll through the sizeable Plaza de Espãna, with its large monument dedicated to the first Spanish constitution, which was signed here in 1812. Cádiz is the gateway to Seville – where flamenco rhythms, grand cathedrals, and delicious tapas make this one of Spain’s most vibrant cities. Stroll around Seville Old Town, home to some important sights, including the Royal Alcázar of Seville, the oldest operating royal palace in Europe, and the Giralda, the striking bell tower of Seville Cathedral, which is one of the world’s largest cathedrals.
Mykonos, Greece
Windswept and sun-drenched Mykonos enjoys a soaring status as a premier summer destination in Greece, with a vibrant beach vibe and characterful architecture. Its rugged terrain is dotted with chalky olive bushes, granite stone, windmills and blinding white-washed buildings – all bordered by beach and backlit by an unflinching blue sky. Exploring the charming labyrinth of streets in Mykonos Town offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s awe-inspiring Cycladic architecture and cosmopolitan vibe. Morning on Mykonos town's main quay is usually busy with deliveries, visitors for the sacred island of Delos boats, lazy breakfasters and street cleaners dealing with the previous night’s fun and excitement. As the night turns up, the sand-side bars and beach clubs welcome diverse crowds, serving colourful cocktail combinations whilst the music sings out.
Santorini, Greece
With azure Aegean Sea and beaches made up of black, white and red lava pebbles — Santorini is a traveller’s favourite, be it for romance, sunsets, sightseeing or simply just cruising by! The dreamy Greek island is famed for its iconic, cobalt blue-domed churches, white-washed houses and bougainvillaea-strewn terraces, combined with the volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear waters and stunning sunsets that paint the sky in a myriad of colours. Oia is a vantage point for sunset-viewing, where visitors can climb the watchtower of Oia Castle to witness the sunset in all its glory, backed by the endless sea and caldera beyond. For beach basking, Red Beach offers a unique experience and extraordinary scenery, made up of volcanic rocks, black and red pebbles, and crimson red sand!
Athens (Piraeus), Greece
Athens was once the beating heart of the Greek Empire and today, is overflowing with stories and legends! You may begin your exploration by visiting The Pantheon, the Acropolis, and the relaxed Plaka District – the historical and architectural marvels that reflect the epoch-making events of the past. Perched atop a rugged outcrop overlooking Athens, the Acropolis is the symbol of Greek civilization and arguably the greatest amongst all the historic sites in ancient Greece. Not too far away from the famous Acropolis, Ancient Agora of Athens provides an insight into Athenian social and political affairs during the Classical Age. Whilst the Greek capital allows us to step back in time to its illustrious glory, it’s now rapidly transforming into a modern urban area with buzzing bars, museums and restaurants.
Crete (Heraklion), Greece
Heraklion in Crete is the largest of the Greek Isles, complete with 650 miles of stunning coastline! Having been controlled by Arabic, Venetian and Ottoman empires over the years, it's no surprise that Heraklion is a diverse patchwork of exotic cultures and historical treasures. Celebrated as the birthplace of the Spanish Renaissance artist, El Greco, you can visit to explore the storied ruins of the Minoan empire's capital, and unearth the rich cultural treasures that Crete’s bustling modern capital has to offer. The city is also the gateway to the famous ancient Greek landmark, Knossos Palace. Often considered as the first European city, Knossos is an intriguing archaeological site in Crete, with an encyclopaedic offering of myths and legends! The historic site was the cradle and principal centre of the Minoan civilisation during the Bronze Age.
Olympia (Katakolon), Greece
A tiny enclave clinging to the western Peloponnese coast, Katakolon is a sleepy place except when ships dock. It's a popular cruise destination because of its proximity to Olympia, making it an idyllic gateway to one of the most important cities in classical Greece. Recognised as the birthplace of the Olympic Games, ancient Olympia gives modern-day sports aficionados and tourists from around the globe an opportunity to follow the footsteps of the very first Olympic athletes who pioneered and inspired the now highly celebrated multi-sports event. Some of the most notable ruins here are the Temple of Zeus, one of the ancient wonders of the world; Temple of Hera, where the lighting of Olympic flame is held; and the Grand Stadium, where the first marathoners once stood.
Cagliari (Sardinia), Italy
Known in Sardinia as Casteddu, Cagliari provides the perfect blend of modern life and mediaeval mystery! The capital city features steep streets and impressive Italianate architecture. It is characterised by a busy commercial centre and waterfront with broad avenues and arch arcades, as well as by the typically narrow streets of the old hilltop citadel. The Museo Archeologico makes a good starting point to a visit. The Bastione di Saint Remy, a striking landmark with a limestone arch and pillars, and Mercato di San Benedetto, one of the best fish markets in Italy, are both a must-see in Cagliari.
Gibraltar, Gibraltar
Tagged on to the end of Iberia, the intriguing British outpost of Gibraltar is dominated by a sandy peninsula and the stunning 1,400-feet-high limestone Rock. Although small, Gibraltar has always been seen as having great strategic importance on account of its advantageous position where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, just 12 miles from the coast of Africa. Ever popular with British holidaymakers, Gibraltar is very much a home from home, boasting excellent duty-free shopping in many familiar British high street shops. Please note: Gibraltar’s small size and narrow winding roads mean that excursions are operated by 22-seater mini-buses, accompanied by a driver/guide. Local health and safety regulations prohibit the carriage of walking aids and collapsible wheelchairs on these vehicles. If you do wish to bring a mobility aid, we can arrange the Rock Tour by taxi, which has extra space. If this suits your requirements, please advise the Tours and Travel office when you join the ship, as numbers are limited.
