Start Your Engines: What is Formula 1?

Start Your Engines: What is Formula 1?

Dating back to the 1950s, Formula 1 (F1) is the pinnacle of motorsport, where 20 F1 drivers from 10 teams race in extreme g-forces aiming for a podium finish every Grand Prix weekend, ultimately to win the World Championships at the end of the season. Whilst these elite athletes are celebrated individually for making it onto the podium every after race, F1 is also undoubtedly a team sport, with two drivers in each team supported by the collective effort of the people behind the paddock.

The most established F1 teams in terms of championship victories at present are Ferrari, McLaren and Williams. The renowned F1 legends of all time include Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, both sharing the feat of bearing the 7-time World Champion title. And for the F1 2025 season, some of the fan-favourite icons gracing the grid are Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, among many others!

Pit Stop to Port Stop: Popular Formula 1 Destinations

Each F1 race is called the ‘Grand Prix,’ which is held in many different circuits around the globe. From vibrant city street speedways to quaint rural circuits, pedal to the metal and track down the most sought-after Formula 1 destinations… and maybe find some inspiration where to watch the world’s fiercest race for glory!

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Hosting the dramatic season finale, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, rightfully so, is one of the most-loved F1 racing events. Abu Dhabi is a vibrant city rivaling the glitz and glamour of Dubai, yet still oozing a traditional and ancient charm. The United Arab Emirates capital is the gateway to the Yas Marina, a purposely-built race track on the artificial Yas Island, which also boasts world-class theme parks, high-rise hotels, and a striking waterfront marina. This cutting-edge circuit is famed for its unique underground pit lane and hosts the only twilight race in the F1 calendar. The F1 Abu Dhabi race begins in daylight and concludes under the floodlights and fireworks at night – making it the perfect stop for crowning the champion!

Miami Grand Prix

Sunshine, skylines and speeds await! Nicknamed the ‘Cruise Capital of the World,’ Miami offers a rare opportunity to merge a Miami Grand Prix adventure with a relaxing cruise holiday. Miami International Autodrome has recently joined the ever-growing slate of F1 venues, with its inaugural race taking place in 2022. This temporary street circuit winds around the history-rich Hard Rock Stadium and is known for its distinct layout and lively crowds – plus a chance to see some of the world’s hottest celebrities! When you’re not chasing after the F1 action, Miami boasts many top things to do, from basking on the beautiful beaches like the South Beach to exploring photography-worthy spots such as the Art Deco Historic district and the quirky Wynwood neighbourhood.

Monaco Grand Prix

Attending the Monaco Grand Prix is on the bucket-list of many motorsport enthusiasts for so many valid reasons! The Monaco GP is part of the ‘Triple Crown of Motorsport,’ alongside the Indianapolis 500 and 25 Hours of Le Mans. Circuit de Monaco saw the first-ever season of Formula 1 in the 1950 and has since been part of the roster to this day. This street speedway is recognised for its challenging course, featuring narrow paths, tight corners and the iconic hairpin turn – all set against the postcard-perfect backdrop of luxury yachts bobbing on the harbour and the glamorous Monte Carlo cityscape! Monaco is a playground of the rich, ideal for those seeking the perfect blend of a jet-set holiday and mild Mediterranean weather.

Spanish Grand Prix

The Spanish Grand Prix gives guests an unmissable chance to combine their cruise escape with the electrifying on-track action of Formula 1 Barcelona race weekend. Set on the bustling capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, Circuit de Barcelona is where you can enjoy passionate crowds, rich history and unforgettable moments, all whilst staying close to the city. Barcelona, one of the busiest port cities in Europe, is known for its impressive architecture, rich local culture and lively nightlife. Often likened with the Fifth Avenue of New York City, Las Ramblas is an energetic tree-lined pedestrian boulevard in the cosmopolitan capital. Whilst here, wander the medieval streets of the Barri Gotic and be wowed by Modernista churches like Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia!

Singapore Grand Prix

Nothing quite compares to the magical spectacle of an evening race in Singapore! Priding itself as F1’s original night race that occured in the first-ever street circuit in Asia, Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for every F1 fan. Witness the F1 cars zoom past the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands in pulse-pounding speeds, with the stunning skylines and the glittering harbour in the background – a marvelous scene straight out of the movies! Where cultural enclaves lie in the shadows of state-of-the-art skyscrapers, lush greenery is integrated into the urban landscape, and 5-star fine-dining restaurants stand next to traditional street food stalls, Singapore is a city of contrasts that seamlessly wraps a little bit of everything, all in one place…

Formula 1 Cruises FAQs

What’s included in the F1 cruise deals?

The standard inclusions vary for each bespoke package of the Grand Prix Collection. All guests are granted tickets to the race events, deluxe hotel stays, return flights and selected transfers, as well as a well-appointed cruise accommodation and access to an array of onboard amenities and entertainment.

Are F1 tickets included in the package?

Yes. Some cruise packages offer a full three-day race weekend from practice sessions to the race day, whilst others may only include a two-day access to the qualifying and race day, and some just the main event on Sunday. Regardless, a seated grandstand ticket is given to each guest, offering them a chance to watch the world’s most prestigious motorsport race up close and personal!

Which cruise line sponsors F1 racing?

The Cruise Division of MSC Group, comprising the MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, pushes the limits of imagination and takes cruising to new heights with its global partnership with Formula 1, the world’s most reputable motor racing competition. MSC Cruises is the title sponsor for three 2025 Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix races, including the Austrian Grand Prix, United States Grand Prix and the Brazil Grand Prix.

What should I wear to the Grand Prix?

There’s no specific dress code for watching the Grand Prix, but smart-casual attire is generally recommended and flip-flops are not allowed in most F1 hospitality areas. You can wear whatever you’re comfortable with as long as it aligns with the atmosphere of the Formula 1 races and respects the culture of the host city. Since you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking around the track, choosing the most comfortable footwear is encouraged.

It’s always best to check the weather forecast of the destination you’re visiting to watch an F1 race. For example, Singapore and Miami’s weather might be hot and humid so it’s recommended to wear lightweight and breathable clothing. Meanwhile, it can get cold and wet during the Great Britain Grand Prix, so you might want to consider choosing an attire that can keep you warm and dry.

Grand Prix is one of the few events where you can dress up in lavish and eccentric outfits you don’t normally wear to express yourself freely. Some F1 fans may even appear in their full-on team merchandise – and no one is here to judge!  Ultimately, the best way is to show up in your best personal style without compromising comfort and cultural sensitivity.

Where is the best F1 Grand Prix location?

Whilst the best destination to experience the F1 Grand Prix varies per person, some of the most famous and fan-favourite circuits are in Monaco, Great Britain, Italy and Singapore.
