Uncover Mayan ruins & beyond

Situated on the south of Mexico, Guatemala was one of the epicenters of the ancient Mayan civilization – packed with colourful history and impressive Maya archeological sites, all ready and waiting to be uncovered! Kick-off your Guatemala journey in one of the largest Pacific Ocean ports in Central America, Puerto Quetzal, which is a perfect jump-off point for exploring the capital, Antigua and Lake Atitlan, as well as the magnificent Maya ruins in the Tikal National Park! And on the country’s Caribbean coast, near Honduras, the seaside town of Santo Tomas de Castilla hosts a more peaceful and less-crowded cruise hub to Guatemala.

Guatemala City is the vibrant capital, steeped with Mayan history, lively local atmosphere and striking architecture like the National Palace of Culture and National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. West of the capital lies Antigua, one of the most sought-after destinations in Guatemala, with breath-taking volcanic landscapes serving as a backdrop for Spanish colonial buildings. Where verdant hills meet the mysterious turquoise waters, the Lake Atitlan area boasts beautiful scenery straight out of a postcard!

Things to do in Guatemala

Discover ancient Mayan ruins

Guatemala is known for its rich Mayan history, as seen in the many dramatic Mayan ruins dotting the country. Tikal National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most reputable and important Mayan sites in Guatemala. Tucked inside a lush forest, this pre-Columbian archaeological complex offers a mix of incredible natural and cultural heritage! Another UNESCO-listed gem from the brilliant Maya civilization is the ancient city of Quirigua, which is accessible from Santo Tomas de Castilla and features towering temples and centuries-old monuments!

Take a day trip to Antigua

Where well-preserved Spanish-style buildings meet scenic volcanic landscapes, Antigua is full to the brim with cobblestone streets, historic churches, cosy coffee shops and vibrantly painted houses! The colonial city was once the capital of Guatemala before Guatemala City and is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It’s idyllically framed by towering volcanoes and the streetscapes are dotted with restored colourful facades, making the place postcard-perfect at every turn! Whilst here, visit the ornate basilicas, admire the volcano and city views on rooftop terraces, and if you have more time and seek some action – why not hike up one of the volcanoes surrounding the city?

Marvel at the beauty of Lake Atitlan

Take the time to visit Lake Atitlan, one of the world’s most enchanting lakes – set against the picturesque volcanic landscape backdrop! Admire the beauty of the lake’s sparkling waters reaching a depth of over 340 metres, making it the deepest lake in the continent. Explore the small Mayan towns and villages enveloping the lakeshore or why not take a horseback ride along the calm shores? Whether you’re a culture enthusiast, nature lover, or simply looking to relax and unwind – Lake Atitlan turns every moment into something memorable!

Connect with nature at Semuc Champey

Looking for a tranquil spot away from the hustle and bustle? Go for an off-the-beaten path destination at Semuc Champey, which is nestled in a dense jungle and complete with dazzling natural pools, limestone bridges, a network of majestic caves – plus spectacular viewpoints! Lanquin is a small mountain town serving as the gateway to this unspoilt nature reserve and many more hidden gems in Guatemala. At Semuc Chamney, you can enjoy plenty of exciting activities, including river tubing, cave tours, swimming, and even just simply soaking in the serenity of nature!

Guatemala Cruises FAQs

When is the best time to visit Guatemala?

Generally, the best time for a cruise to Central America is during the dry season, between November and April. During this period, travellers get to enjoy warm weather and clear skies, perfect for outdoor activities, beach escapes and sightseeing. However, keep in mind that this is also the peak season, so expect big crowds and higher prices during this time. October, May and June are the shoulder months in case you want to avoid the crowds and still enjoy relatively good weather.

Which cruise lines go to Guatemala?

Several major cruise lines offer Central America cruise itineraries that include Puerto Quetzal, such as Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and MSC Cruises.

What language is used in Guatemala?

Spanish is the official and widely spoken language in Guatemala, as well as various indigenous languages. Whilst English is used in most touristy areas, it'll still be helpful to learn a few Spanish words and phrases to be able to interact and communicate with the locals during your visit.

What is the best currency to use in Guatemala?

Guatemalan Quetzal is the official currency in Guatemala, but US Dollars are still widely accepted especially in touristy areas. It is recommended to carry both card and cash as some areas only accept cash. Fee-free ATMs are also infrequent, so expect a surcharge when withdrawing money from the ATM machines.

Is there a tipping culture?

Tipping is not customary in Guatemala but is generally appreciated. Most mid-range to upscale establishments usually add a 10% service charge to your bill.
