Things to do in Brunei

Experience the traditional river lifestyle

Kampong Ayer is Brunei’s answer to the overwater villas of Maldives and French Polynesia. We imagine luxurious stilted bungalows backed by dramatic landscapes and turquoise waters when we think of one, but Brunei’s version is a centuries-old settlement accommodating thousands of local residents. The city on the stilts comprises a series of timber houses and neighbourhoods suspended on the river, all stitched by a network of wooden and concrete boardwalks. Nicknamed the ‘Venice of the East,’ Kampong Ayer offers a glimpse into the unique traditional river lifestyle of the locals that call the historic floating villages home.

Visit the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

Soaring at the heart of the capital is Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, arguably the most recognisable landmark in Brunei. Colloquially known as ‘Old Mosque,’ this royal mosque is an architectural gem that exudes a blend of old-world charm and modern grandeur. A crystal-clear artificial lagoon pool surrounds this national icon, perfectly capturing the magnificent reflection of the mosque especially on sunny days! When night falls, the grand mosque transforms into an even more majestic structure as it glows with golden lighting that creates a spectacularly illuminated display against the dark evening skies.

Spot Proboscis monkeys

Southeast Asia is a popular haven for diverse species of monkeys, including the iconic Proboscis monkeys – characterized by unusually long noses and reddish skin! These eccentric primates are commonly found in lush mangrove forests on the island of Borneo. Set along the banks of Brunei River, Damuan Park is a tranquil green oasis in the capital where you can escape the city buzz and see some of these mischievous monkey species in the wild! Get the chance to meet these playful creatures up-close and personal or simply watch them swing along the vines at a safe distance.

Sample local delicacies at a night market

After sunset, Gadong Night Market comes alive with the buzz of tourists and locals, swarming to indulge in the wide selection of authentic street food! This large open-air market offers a variety of mouth-watering local food and drinks, bringing the diverse flavours of Asia in a single vibrant setting, all for incredibly affordable prices. Get a taste of the traditional Southeast Asian specialties, including popular choices like Roti John, various satay options, and ambuyat – Brunei’s national dish! Don’t miss out on trying the sweet treats too, from the pancake-type Kuih Malaya to exotic fruits like durian! The market is open from 4pm to 10pm daily and remember to bring cash when you visit.
