Straddling the equator on the west coast of South America, Ecuador is famed for its diverse landscapes, incredible wildlife and vibrant cultures. The world-renowned ecological archipelago, Galapagos Islands, is an unspoiled slice of paradise that beckons nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike – where human interference has been kept to a bare minimum! Ecuador’s Amazon Rainforest is known as the Oriente, boasting a truly spectacular biodiversity and offering an unmissable chance to experience the World’s largest tropical rainforest in its most unspoilt state! The Andes, the World’s largest mountain ranges, cut across seven countries in South America including Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Bolivia – and the Ecuadorian Andes is home to the Chimborazo, the furthest peak from Earth's centre and Ecuador’s UNESCO-listed capital! Things to Do in Ecuador

Stand on the equator

Quito, Ecuador’s quaint capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage site – perched high in the mighty Andes mountains and steeped with well-preserved colonial architecture! The capital city radiates the atmosphere and style of an ancient Incan city, dotted with centuries-old churches and brightly-coloured houses. Discover the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, where you’ll wind past the striking squares like Plaza Grande and Plaza de San Francisco, the magnificent churches of  Basílica del Voto Nacional and  Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, and the colourful street of La Ronda. And with Quito’s idyllic location directly on the equator, you’ll get the one-of-a-kind opportunity to be in the middle of the Earth in the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo!

Soak up sun and sand

Sun, sand and seafood galore! Manta is a picturesque port city on Ecuador’s central coast known for its thriving tuna-fishing industry and spectacular beaches. During your visit, stroll the Malecón Escénico – keeping an eye out for the best panama hat and freshest seafood along the way! Set at the northwestern tip of the city, Murciélago Beach is a popular beach spot for tourists and locals alike, and if you want to escape the bustling crowds, head to San Mateo or Santa Marianita Beach for a peaceful and laid-back beach experience. The Central Bank Museum is the perfect place to swat up Manta’s cultural heritage, featuring pre-Columbian artifacts and Ecuadorian artworks!

Spend a day in Pearl of the Pacific

Dubbed as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific,’ Guayaquil is a lively coastal getaway and the gateway to the pristine Pacific beaches and the Galapagos Islands. Take a leisurely walk on the Malecón 2000, a picturesque boardwalk along the Guayas River, for stunning sunsets and a cool breeze! Las Peñas beckons history buffs to travel back in time in Guayaquil’s oldest neighbourhood – famed for its 444-step Santa Ana Hill, colourful houses and cobbled alleys. At the top of the Santa Ana Hill, you’ll find the iconic El Faro lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views of the city and beyond.

Follow the footsteps of Charles Darwin

Dreaming of the ultimate bucket-list-worthy experience? A province of Ecuador, the off-the-coast Galapagos Islands is where nature and fauna are left to take the course! The volcanic archipelago is one of the world’s leading wildlife-viewing and bird-watching destinations, hosting a wealth of rare animal and plant species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. It’s composed of 13 main islands and over a hundred islets and rocks, such as Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Bartolome and more! Trace the steps of Charles Darwin and see for yourself what sparked his groundbreaking theory of evolution by natural selection.

Ecuador Cruises FAQs

Which cruise lines go to Ecuador?

Many of our partner major cruise lines offer cruise itineraries that sail to Ecuador and Galapagos Islands, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Silversea, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Princess Cruises.

What is the best month to go to Ecuador?

The most ideal time to cruise to Ecuador depends on the itinerary, destination, and activities of your choice. The dry season, between June and September, offers warm temperatures and clear skies, perfect for exploring the Andean region including Quito. Ecuador also makes an ideal destination for winter cruises, from December to February, when the Galapagos Islands and the Pacific Coast region are usually warm.

When is the best time to cruise the Galapagos Islands?

Whilst Galapagos Islands is a year-round destination, December to May are generally the best months for a cruise, when the weather is warmer and the sea is calmer. There may be light rain, but the bloom of vegetation and turtle nesting make the experience worth it. December is also the hatching season for giant tortoises. Alternatively, June through November brings less rain and average highs of 25⁰C. The water can be a little bit choppier but is worth bearing as this is the mating season for many birds, including the waved albatross, blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls.

What’s so special about the Galapagos Islands?

An oasis for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, Galapagos Islands is an exotic haven where an abundance of rare species exclusive to the islands can be found, including the giant tortoises, marine iguanas, Darwin’s finches, waved albatross and more. The rich and unspoiled biodiversity, with little to no human disturbance, draws many tourists to the remote islands every year. The immense marine reserve also inspired the acclaimed naturalist and geologist, Charles Darwin, in formulating his revolutionary theory of evolution.

What is the best currency to use in Ecuador?

The official currency in Ecuador is the US Dollar (USD), so USD is essentially the best currency to use here, making it convenient and easy for American travellers visiting. Ecuador is one of the three countries in the world to use the USD as the official currency, alongside Panama and the United States of America.
