Southampton, England

Lying near the head of Southampton Water, a peninsula between the estuaries of the Rivers Test and Itchen, Southampton is Britain’s largest cruise port. It has been one of England’s major ports since the Middle Ages, when it exported wool and hides from the hinterland and imported wine from Bordeaux. The city suffered heavy damage during World War Two and as a result the centre has been extensively rebuilt, but there are still some interesting medieval buildings including the Bargate, one of the finest city gatehouses in England.

Honfleur, France

Honfleur, the most picturesque of the Côte Fleurie's seaside towns, is a time-burnished place with a surplus of half-timber houses and cobbled streets that are lined with a stunning selection of stylish boutiques. Much of its Renaissance architecture remains intact—especially around the 17th-century Vieux Bassin harbor, where the water is fronted on one side by two-story stone houses with low, sloping roofs and on the other by tall slate-topped houses with wooden facades. 

Saint Peter Port, Guernsey

Portimão, Portugal

Portimão is a major fishing port transformed into an attractive cruise port as well. Seville (Cádiz), Spain

Believed to be the oldest town on the Iberian Peninsula, the Andalusian port of Cádiz enjoys a stunning location at the edge of a six-mile promontory. Tangier, Morocco

Tangier is a bustling city in northern Morocco, known for its colourful markets and historic sites, providing a glimpse into the country's rich history and culture. Whilst here, spend some time admiring the whitewashed façades of the inner city and check out the wonder-filled Hercules Caves before you leave. Overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar, the city lies on a bay between two promontories. Málaga, Spain

As you sail into Malaga, you will notice what an idyllic setting the city enjoys on the famous Costa del Sol. Cartagena, Spain

A Mediterranean city and naval station located in the Region of Murcia, southeastern Spain, Cartagena’s sheltered bay has attracted sailors for centuries. The Carthaginians founded the city in 223BC and named it Cartago Nova; it later became a prosperous Roman colony, and a Byzantine trading centre. The city has been the main Spanish Mediterranean naval base since the reign of King Philip II, and is still surrounded by walls built during this period. Cartagena’s importance grew with the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century, when the Navidad Fortress was constructed to protect the harbour. In recent years, traces of the city’s fascinating past have been brought to light: a well-preserved Roman Theatre was discovered in 1988, and this has now been restored and opened to the public. During your free time, you may like to take a mini-cruise around Cartagena's historic harbour: these operate several times a day, take approximately 40 minutes and do not need to be booked in advance. Alicante, Spain

Alicante, the provincial capital of the Valencian Community, serves as a gateway to the huge influx of tourists that flock to the Costa Blanca resorts every year. This summer paradise is popular among holidaymakers and leisure-seekers looking to relax and unwind in the warm, Mediterranean climate and seemingly endless golden beaches. Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Palma de Mallorca, the heart of the Balearic Islands, is where you’ll find a delightful mix of culture, shopping, and stunning architecture. This resort city is the capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca, known for its endless sunshine and sun-drenched beaches. The beautiful old town offers a refreshing break from the sun and water sports, where you’ll find plenty of Gothic churches, picturesque squares, century-old interior patios and delightful museums. Barcelona, Spain

The vibrant capital of Spain’s Catalonia is a banquet for the senses, with its beguiling mix of ancient and modern architecture, tempting cafés and markets, and sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches. Palamós, Spain

One of the best ways to arrive in Catalonia is by sea, especially via the Costa Brava. This coastline, also known as the Rugged or Wild Coast, stretches from Blanes to the French border. Its name aptly refers to the steep cliff of ancient twisted rocks, which runs its entire length and is bounded inland by the Catalan mountain ranges. The intensity of the coast’s colour, the ruggedness of the rocks and the scent of the plants all combine to add to its attraction. The history of this region is long and varied. Traces can be found of the advanced culture of the Iberians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. With Wilfred I and the independence of Catalan countries, the Catalan dynasty was born. Later, in 1479, Catalonia became a part of unified Spain following the marriage of Isabel, Queen of Castile, and Fernando, King of Aragon. The port of Palamos, some 36 miles northeast of Barcelona, has been in existence for nearly 700 years thanks to its location on one of the deepest natural bays in the western Mediterranean. The town itself is the southernmost of a series of resorts popular with sun worshippers. For the most part, Palamos has managed to retain some of the charm of a fishing village. The port also serves as a gateway to such inland locations as Girona, the capital of the province. Art lovers may want to visit Figueras, famous for its bizarre Teatre-Museu Dali, the foremost of a series of sites associated with the eccentric surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. If you choose to stay in Palamos, you can enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of the town or spend some time at a nearby beach. The town has a long seagoing tradition and busy harbour. The fish auction, prompted by the arrival of the fishing boats, is a spectacle worth seeing. The Fishing Museum illustrates the history and the life of the families who live off the sea.

Saint-Tropez, France

Once a sleepy fishing village, Saint-Tropez was transformed into a glitzy and glamorous holiday resort, perfect for turning the dream of a jet-set lifestyle into reality! This lavish coastal town on the French Riviera welcomes travellers with cosy cafes and a picturesque old town in sugared-almond hues, as well as pristine sandy beaches, stunning landscapes and vibrant nightlife! The cobblestoned La Ponche quarter offers a glimpse into the city’s storied past as a serene fishing village, whilst the bustling Vieux Port is where you’ll get an awe-inspiring sight of luxurious yachts bobbing on the harbour. 

Monaco, Monaco

The 202-hectare Principality of Monaco is located east of France’s Mediterranean coast. Known for its royal family, especially Prince Albert of Monaco, its casinos and racetracks and for being a wealthy state with no applied taxes. Monaco is reachable by air through the French airport of Nice Côte d'Azur, located approximately 16 miles from the principality.

Portofino (Santa Margherita), Italy

One of the most photographed villages along the coast, with a decidedly romantic and affluent aura, Portofino has long been a popular destination for the rich and famous. Once an ancient Roman colony and taken by the Republic of Genoa in 1229, it’s also been ruled by the French, English, Spanish, and Austrians, as well as by marauding bands of 16th-century pirates. Elite British tourists first flocked to the lush harbor in the mid-1800s. Some of Europe's wealthiest drop anchor in Portofino in summer, but they stay out of sight by day, appearing in the evening after buses and boats have carried off the day-trippers.There's not actually much to do in Portofino other than stroll around the wee harbor, see the castle, walk to Punta del Capo, browse at the pricey boutiques, and sip a coffee while people-watching. However, weaving through picture-perfect cliffside gardens and gazing at yachts framed by the sapphire Ligurian Sea and the cliffs of Santa Margherita can make for quite a relaxing afternoon. There are also several tame, photo-friendly hikes into the hills to nearby villages.Unless you're traveling on a deluxe budget, you may want to stay in Camogli or Santa Margherita Ligure rather than at one of Portofino's few very expensive hotels. Restaurants and cafés are good but also pricey (don't expect to have a beer here for much under €10).

Florence/Pisa/Cinque Terre (Livorno), Italy

Livorno is a gritty city with a long and interesting history. It’s the gateway to Florence, Pisa and Cinque Terre, which are located in Italy’s Tuscany region, just a short train ride away. Florence is known for the majestic Duomo, or the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore – a majestic structure representing Gothic art and the first Italian Renaissance. Don’t miss the panoramic view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo! From Livorno, you can also reach the legendary Leaning Tower of Pisa, an extraordinary silhouette that symbolises the Romanesque-inspired mediaeval architecture that gained worldwide popularity for its unintended titled stance that began to take shape five years into its construction. And in the seaside villages of Cinque Terre, admire colourful houses, lush vineyards and indulge in the freshest seafood!

Ajaccio, Corsica, France

Considered Corsica’s primary commercial and cultural hub, the largest city and regional capital of Ajaccio is situated on the west coast of the French island in the Mediterranean Sea. This quaint port city is a great summer destination, steeped with delightful museums, sun-kissed beaches and scenic natural landscapes! Known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, be sure to visit the national museum dedicated to him, which was formerly his residential home – paying tribute to the emperor’s historical influence! Remnants from what was originally a 12th-century Genoese colony are still visible around the Old Town near the imposing citadel and watchtower.

Bastia, France

Corsica's northern capital, Bastia, is the centre of commerce and industry and a thriving freight and passenger port. Bastia's industrial sprawl, however, is offset by its aged charm. The presence of an overwhelming Italian atmosphere adds to the city's attraction. Two distinct areas comprise the city: Terra Vecchia, the old quarter, consisting of haphazard streets, flamboyant Baroque churches and lofty tenements, with their crumbling golden-grey walls set against a backdrop of fire-darkened hills; and the more orderly Terra Nova, the historic district favoured by prominent doctors, lawyers and architects.

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Civitavecchia is the cruise port for Rome – the Eternal City and heart of Italy! The vibrant capital lives in the present, but no other city on earth evokes its past so powerfully. For over 2,500 years, emperors, popes, artists, and common citizens have left their mark here. Archaeological remains from ancient Rome, art-stuffed churches, and the treasures of Vatican City vie for your attention, but Rome is also a wonderful place to practise the Italian-perfected il dolce far niente, the sweet art of idleness. Amalfi Coast (Salerno), Italy

Messina (Sicily), Italy

Home to the Museo Regionale of Messina, known for featuring two of Caravaggio's paintings, Messina is also famous for having been the capital of the ancient kingdom of Sicily. This glittering port town northeast Sicily is spread up the hillside beyond its sickle-shaped harbour. From the awe-inspiring Greek landmarks and pristine beaches, Messina doesn’t fall short of sights and activities to enjoy! Wander around the city centre, where you’ll see the city hall, the Catalani Church, Antonello Square, and the iconic Cathedral’s Bell Tower – which displays one of the largest astronomical clocks in the world! Pair the historic walk with a tour of the Messina & Regional Museum, featuring paintings, sculptures and other artworks. 

Valletta, Malta

Malta's capital, the small city of Valletta, has ornate palaces and museums protected by massive fortifications of honey-color limestone. Houses along the narrow streets have overhanging wooden balconies for people-watching from indoors. Generations ago they gave housebound women a window on the world of the street. The main entrance to town is through the City Gate (where all bus routes end), which leads onto Triq Repubblika (Republic Street), the spine of the grid-pattern city and the main shopping street. Triq Mercante (Merchant Street) parallels Repubblika to the east and is also good for strolling. From these two streets, cross streets descend toward the water; some are stepped. Valletta's compactness makes it ideal to explore on foot. 

Kotor, Montenegro

Backed by imposing mountains and azure Adriatic waters, Kotor is a tiny fortified town in Montenegro where nature meets adventure! The picturesque port is home to a historic UNESCO-listed Old Town, featuring a labyrinth of narrow, cobblestone streets, delightful museums and Romanesque churches, including the world-famous Kotor Cathedral. Another notable attraction here is the Kotor Fortress, offering breath-taking views of the ancient city and the Bay of Kotor.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The walled city of Dubrovnik is easily one of the most beautiful fortified cities in the world, rivalling the likes of Rome and Athens with its fascinating history hidden behind the seaport walls. Bari, Italy

Bari, capital of the province of Apulia, lies on southern Italy's Adriatic coast. The port city comprises a new and an old town. To the north, on a promontory between the old and new harbours, lies the picturesque old town, or Citta Vecchia, with a maze of narrow, crooked streets. The wall-encircled Lower Town extends along the slopes of a 985-foot-high crag that projects into the sea on the east side of the Peloponnese. For centuries an impressive stronghold, population dwindled as the inhabitants moved to the mainland. But with the beginning of a restoration program aimed to preserve Monemvasia's heritage, the Lower Town experienced a new lease on life, and people have begun to return. The Upper Town is situated on top of the Rock of Monemvasia. It is reached via a zigzagging, paved lane. An almost impregnable bastion in earlier days, it has been uninhabited for centuries, but still manages to preserve its magnificent appearance. Visitors today can explore the remains of the ancient citadel-castle and visit the church of Hagia Sofia. From the summit there is also a fantastic view of the surrounding area.

It's also a convenient jumping-off point for exploring several of Israel's most interesting cities, including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Bethlehem.

Some of the most notable ruins here are the Temple of Zeus, one of the ancient wonders of the world; Temple of Hera, where the lighting of Olympic flame is held; and the Grand Stadium, where the first marathoners once stood.

Trapani, Sicily, Italy

Trapani, the most important town on Sicily’s west coast, lies below the headland of Mount Erice and offers stunning views of the Egadi Islands on a clear day. Trapani’s Old District occupies a scimitarshaped promontory between the open sea on the north and the salt marshes to the south. The ancient industry of extracting salt from the marshes has recently been revived, and it is documented in the Museo delle Saline. In addition to the salt marshes,Trapani’s other interesting environs include the beautiful little hill town of Erice, the promontory of Capo San Vito stretching north beyond the splendid headland of Monte Cofano, the lovely island of Motya and the town of Marsala. Trips farther afield will take you to the magnificent site of Segesta or the Egadi Islands, reached by boat or hydrofoil from Trapani Port.

Valletta, Malta

Malta's capital, the small city of Valletta, has ornate palaces and museums protected by massive fortifications of honey-color limestone. Houses along the narrow streets have overhanging wooden balconies for people-watching from indoors. Generations ago they gave housebound women a window on the world of the street. The main entrance to town is through the City Gate (where all bus routes end), which leads onto Triq Repubblika (Republic Street), the spine of the grid-pattern city and the main shopping street. Triq Mercante (Merchant Street) parallels Repubblika to the east and is also good for strolling. From these two streets, cross streets descend toward the water; some are stepped. Valletta's compactness makes it ideal to explore on foot.
