Top Things to Do in Bali

Visit the Lempuyang Temple

Discover Bali’s iconic ‘Gate of Heaven’ at the Lempuyang Temple – a sacred seven-temple complex on the eastern highlights of Bali set against the island’s highest peak. The most ideal time to visit is during sunrise or sunset, where you can position yourself between the gates that frame the mighty Mount Agung for picture-perfect shots! But there’s more to the temple than just the popular photo-op as it also showcases the rich Balinese Hindu culture, traditional Balinese architecture, and the majestic scenery of the landscapes surrounding the place!

Take the sunrise hike to Mount Batur

Bali is referred to as the ‘Morning of the World’ for its spellbinding sunrise and the summit of Mount Batur is arguably the best vantage point for Bali’s morning splendour. The 1717-metre active volcano is home to Bali’s largest crater lake, offering well-developed slopes perfect for an easy hiking experience with quaint villages to enchant you along the way. From the Mount Batur viewpoint, you’ll be granted panoramic views of the crater lake and surrounding mountains on top of the awe-inspiring rising sun!

Experience nature and culture in Ubud

Interacting with the mischievous monkeys at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is one of the best things to do in Ubud. This sanctuary is a nature reserve and temple complex, combining unique experiences in one setting. Home to over 1,260 long-tailed macaques, this is one of the perfect spots in Bali to meet these playful creatures up-close and personal or simply watch them swing along the vines at a safe distance. When you’re not spotting monkeys in action, why not watch a traditional Balinese performance or see the enchanting temples and intricate statues around the area?

Bask in the sun in Tanjung Benoa Beach

Gear up and get your adrenaline pumping as you enjoy various water sports like jet skiing, parasailing, sea walking and fly fishing in Tanjung Benoa Beach. Set on Bali’s east coast, this stunning beach offers a mix of golden sands and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for escaping the crowds in the famous Nusa Dua and Kuta Beach. The waters are clear and calm, ideal for snorkelling or lounging under the swaying palm trees. If you want a rather laid-back experience, pamper yourself with a traditional Balinese massage.

See the Tegallalang Rice Terraces

The Tegallalang Rice Terraces is a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Ubud and considered one of the most photogenic spots in Bali. The most ideal time to see this natural wonder is in the morning during sunrise or late afternoon, when the sun is about to set, to enjoy the scenic greenery in all its glory. Savour the views from the top elevation or cycle through the quaint villages for a full experience of the beautifully landscaped cascading rice fields. You can also ride the famous swing with the ‘I Love Bali’ signage at the entrance of the rice field, and be sure not to miss out on tasting Bali’s authentic coffee with local beans freshly sourced from the plantation!

Bali Cruises FAQs

Are there cruises to Bali?

Several mainstream cruise lines offer cruises to Bali, which usually last between 11 to 15 nights. Select cruises include an overnight stay in Benoa, one of the main cruise ports for Bali. Most cruises to Bali tie up with other ports in nearby Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Philippines. There are also Bali cruises that visit Australia, the Great Barrier Reef and Singapore.

Where do cruise ships dock in Bali?

There are two main cruise ports for Bali, one on the north and one on the south. Benoa is the gateway for southern Bali whilst Celukan Bawang is for northern Bali. Many cruise lines offer sailings to Bali, including Celebrity Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

When is the best time for a Bali cruise?

Thanks to Indonesia's tropical climate, you can enjoy warm and sunny weather year-round. The driest months would be between April and October, when there’s less rain and the weather is perfect for going to the beach and outdoor activities.

What do people wear in Bali?

Bali is a tropical country so casual attire made of light material is one of the most common daywear for comfort and style. However, if you’re visiting temples or sacred sites, there’s often a required dress code to follow. For both men and women, it’s important to remember that revealing clothes must be avoided, shoulders must be covered at all times, and bottom wear must be below the knee. Sarongs are often included in the ticket price at most Bali temples. When entering a temple, visitors must leave their shoes near the entrance of the temple.

How can I get around Bali?

Bali is relatively a small island in Indonesia, but it can take a pretty long time to navigate the island. It’s also important to note that traffic jams are common in the densely populated southern and central parts of the islands where the main attractions are located. Public buses are the frequently used mode of public transportation in Bali as it connects most of the Balinese towns and offers affordable fares. Riding a taxi is one of the most convenient ways to get around and is sometimes surprisingly cheap, thanks to the low fuel prices. Grab is a taxi-hailing mobile application that allows people to book and reserve a ride online.
