Great Stirrup Cay is an idyllic island owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, basking in the sunshine on the northern edge of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. This former private hideout was the first uninhabited island to ever be turned into a private cruise port, and has been owned by Norwegian Cruise Line since 1986.
As well as offering activities in abundance, the 268-acre oasis is home to an automated lighthouse, crystal clear ocean, powder-sand beaches and lush coconut planation, which you can explore at your leisure. You can also expect a warm tropical temperature on your visit, with May to October offering the highest temperatures of up to 32 degrees with a gentle sea breeze.
The Island’s most popular activity is simply lounging beachside, and with three beaches to choose from, you’re spoiled for choice! Bertram’s Beach, Cabana Beach & Fiesta Beach all offer white sand and gorgeous blue water, with various levels of seclusion. Whether you want to top up your tan, seek shade under a palm tree or build a sandcastle, there’s plenty to do on these soft sand stretches!
If you’re looking for a more adventurous trip ashore, you can don your snorkel swim with sea turtles and colourful fish or even pigs! On nearby Treasure Island, playful pigs splash along the coastline and swim up to you in the shallows. As part of the Swimming Pigs excursion, you can also feed the pigs apples and tickle their tummies.
Or perhaps rent a kayak or paddle board and glide along the shore, looking up as guests soar high into the sky via zipline! Possibly offering the best view of the island and surrounding reefs, get your helmet and harness at the ready for an hour of climbing, flying and jumping on the Island Zipline Adventure.
For ultimate relaxation, treat yourself to a day at a private retreat at Silver Cove, where your luxurious villa awaits. The recently completed highlights include the Great Life Lagoon, a spectacular heated pool facing the sea, a new welcome plaza, as well as a kid-friendly splash harbour and adults’ relaxation zones. These fresh upgrades coincided with the completion of the state-of-the-art pier, eliminating the need to tender, plus efficient tram services – offering a more seamless access from ship to sand!
Spanning a whopping scale of 2,600 square metres, the Great Life Lagoon is designed to deliver the ultimate fun and relaxation. Catering to guests of all ages, this oceanfront oasis features lively swim-up bars for adults and a beach-style entrance that leads to a splash pad for young guests. It also comes with private cabanas for rent and comfy loungers for soaking in uninterrupted ocean views and the Bahamian sunshine!
Norwegian Cruise Line also brings two of their signature onboard guest-favourites to the island getaway:
Vibe Shore Club – an adults-only escape, accessible by an all-day pass, where guests can unwind and chill in pure exclusivity with stunning views at every turn.
Horizon Park – a complimentary recreational zone for families, featuring a mini-golf course, pickleball court and lawn-style entertainment, which is also seen on Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Breakaway.
How do I get to Great Stirrup Cay?
Most of Norwegian Cruise Line’s ships sail to Great Stirrup Cay, usually as part of Caribbean itineraries. You can currently find Great Stirrup Cay on the itineraries of the following vessels up to 2027: Norwegian Aqua, Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Escape, plus many others.
In late 2025, the private island destination debuts with a new pier, allowing ships to dock directly at the quay without the need to use tender boats and streamlining the guest experience upon arrival. Tram services are now also provided to make transfers from ship to shore easier and more convenient.
Do you have to pay for the activities on Great Stirrup Cay?
Norwegian Cruise Line currently offers 21 shore excursions to choose from, including watersports equipment hire and cabana rentals. Popular activities such as the ZipLine Adventure, Treasure Island Pig Swimming Excursion and Wave Runner Tour do incur a fee and require pre-booking.
Are food & drinks included at Great Stirrup Cay?
Whilst visiting Great Stirrup Cay, your food is included. Dine at several venues including: Jumbey Beach Grill - an open-air buffet venue serving a selection of fresh burgers, salads, fruit, desserts and Abaco Taco Bar - offering Mexican-style food, where you can build your own Tacos! Cabana & Villa guests have access to the Tropic Like it’s Hot Food Truck, that serves Caribbean-themed dishes and sandwiches.
Does the Island have WiFi?
This is your time to switch-off - completely! The island doesn’t have WiFi so feel free to disconnect and make the most of the island’s activities. However, the island does have a cellphone tower so if you have an international data plan, you will be able to get online.
Following the first batch of enhancements in the private island getaway, guests can look forward to the Great Tides Waterpark, featuring rip-roaring slides, cliffside jumps, and an 80-foot-long dynamic river, as well as a mini aquatic racecourse with jet karts, all set to debut as part of the continued island expansion.
